Round 1 to Mercedes

NEWS STORY
31/01/2026

Shakedown stats suggest that Mercedes has reacted best to rules overhaul.

While Ferrari might walk away feeling confident, Lewis Hamilton having posted the fastest time of the 5-day 'test', Mercedes clearly rules the roost.

Quite simply, as we know nothing about fuel loads, tyre compounds or pretty much anything else - including the fact that most teams saw no point in such so-called glory runs - Hamilton's time, good as it was, albeit 4.802s off Oscar Piastri's 2025 pole-winning time, didn't really prove anything.

On the other hand, is the fact that over its three days of testing Mercedes completed 502 laps, almost eight race distances, while its nearest rival (Ferrari) completed 440 laps.

Of course, Mercedes chose its running days carefully, and, unlike Ferrari, opted not to run on Tuesday when it rained all day, a factor that may prove advantageous to the Maranello outfit and Red Bull.

To be fair, Isack Hadjar's crash on Tuesday sidelined the Austrian team for the next two days, but that's another matter.

Also impressive were Haas and Alpine, the French team clearly benefitting from the decision to change engine partners, while McLaren, as ever, did things its own way and hasn’t really shown its hand, though the world champions could have done without the fuel system issue that sidelined Oscar Piastri for much of Thursday.

Audi eventually got on top of things, while Cadillac insists that it is taking things one step at a time.

Whether Aston Martin feels that 66 laps was worth all the bother only they know, but it gives Adrian Newey a baseline.

Team Test Mileage

Team Laps Miles Kms
Mercedes 502 1452.7 2337.8
Ferrari 440 1273.3 2049.1
Haas 387 1119.9 1802.3
Alpine 349 1009.9 1625.3
Racing Bulls 319 923.1 1485.6
Red Bull 303 876.8 1411.1
McLaren 291 842.1 1355.2
Audi 240 694.5 1117.7
Cadillac 165 477.5 768.4
Aston Martin 66 191.0 307.4

In terms of power units, once again it is the three-pointed star that comes out on top, Mercedes-powered cars completing 1,142 laps, compared to Ferrari's 992.

With Williams missing the test, like Ferrari, Mercedes only powered three teams over the course of the shakedown, and, other than the works team, Alpine also put in some strong mileage.

Considering it's their first attempt, Red Bull Powertrains must be delighted with their 622 laps, which in fact, considering they only powered two teams, puts them just behind Ferrari in terms of average mileage.

There's still a long, long way to go before Melbourne, but Toto and the guys must surely have had a better night's sleep last night than their rivals.

Engine Manufacturer Test Mileage

Audi 240 694.5 1117.7
Honda 66 191.0 307.4

"Nothing to see here other than reliability, still very impresive for all involved, exept Williams of course."
