BIOGRAPHY

Somehow it feels wrong to describe Audi as a newcomer.

Four World Rally Championships, thirteen overall victories at Le Mans, twelve DTM drivers' titles, two WEC drivers’ titles, two World Manufacturers titles, nine ALMS titles, one overall victory in the Dakar Rally... on and on and on it goes.

And, ahead of its F1 debut, there is, of course, the German manufacturer's origins in Grand Prix racing, albeit as Auto Union, when, along with Mercedes, and with financial backing approved by Adolf Hitler, the silver cars ruled the world.

Between 1935 and 1939, Auto Union won seven Grandes Epreuves and 14 non-championship Grands Prix. Bernd Rosemeyer claimed European Drivers' Championship in 1936, winning three of the four rounds driving the Type C, while Hermann Paul Muller, driving the Type D, unofficially won the final race in 1939, the Swiss Grand Prix, the title not awarded due to the onset of World War II.

Now part of the Volkswagen Group, in late 2022 Audi announced that it was to enter the sport as a power unit manufacturer in 2026, the news coming at a time Volkswagen was toying with the idea of two of its brands contesting the pinnacle of motorsport, the other being Porsche, which enjoys an equally illustrious history in racing.

Initially enjoying a partnership with Sauber, Audi subsequently bought a significant stake in the Swiss team for a full rebrand and power unit deal, while a month later the Qatar Investment Authority purchased a minority stake in the team.

The team will be based at three locations: Audi Formula Racing GmbH, which was founded specifically for the project, is developing the power unit in Neuburg an der Donau. Hinwil in Switzerland will be home to the development of the car as well as the planning and operating of the races. In addition, the Technology Office in Bicester provides a foothold in the heart of Motorsport Valley, offering direct access to top F1 talent and key strategic partners.

Veteran Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto joined Sauber on separate multi-year contracts from 2025 onwards, thus becoming the German team’s debut lineup. Additionally, Neel Jani was signed as a simulator driver to assist with car development.

From the first mid-engine Grand Prix car to quattro all-wheel drive in rallying, to diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains at Le Mans, in Formula E and at the Dakar Rally, Audi has led every motorsport project to success with determination, courage, perseverance and team spirit, always pioneering new ground. Audi's involvement in F1 is intended to build on this.
