Jane's Addiction

FEATURE BY MAX NOBLE
14/07/2025

...or... the real reason V8, V10 or V12 engines are back on the work bench for F1.

(Up front foot note: Jane's Addiction were/are an American alternate rock band formed in LA in 1985, that have disbanded and reformed a few times since. Yes there was a Jane, and yes there may well have been addictive items in the band's history. Dave Navarro we are looking at you...)

To cars and engines.

Elon was highly successful in launching Tesla and forcing the big manufacturers to finally design and build functional EVs. This was because he has no connection whatsoever to the oil industry or the existing automotive supply chain. None. For all his ah, eccentric qualities, he is neither a big tobacco man nor a big oil man. This gave him the freedom to romp into the automotive sector and really mess with it.

I believe some of those eccentric qualities of his then amplified this "messin' wit ya'" to levels rarely seen on planet Earth. So keeping oil producers calm, acknowledging the establishment, paying fair dues to government and working with regulators were all optional. And in most cases Elon opted out. A long way out.

EVs go wonderfully with roof top solar, or your own windmill, or waterfall and water wheel should you have space and desire, to eliminate fuel bills. Not reduce them. Not green them. Eliminate them.

That move eliminates income for oil producers, and excise/tax for governments, fuel distributors, petrol (gas) station owners and all those currently turning a dollar off liquefied dinosaurs. We go full EV and in places like Australia, and many other sunny places) where a large number of homes have solar panels and battery packs, and it is good-bye good times for all those black gold dependant folk. Even in cloudy Europe or America, the cash flow moves to electrical power suppliers and away from Big Oil.

Thankfully Saudi Aramco are riding to the rescue for all these poor zillionaires about to see their income streams reduced to zero. Green synthetic fuel is about to save the day for the beloved internal combustion engine (ICE)! Saudi Aramco had revenue of $480.446 billion in 2024, making it one of the most powerful companies on the planet.

Synthetic fuel takes considerable energy to produce, is only 'green' if you do much messing around in production, and if production is poorly executed it can produce net-positive CO2, which kills the entire reason we are trying to go green... to reduce CO2. The big positive is a liquid fuel distribution system already exists, plus Big Oil and global governments are fully addicted to the money. So lots of major players want to ensure the mobile public retain an addiction to liquid fuel in ICE cars. Not "fuel for free" from personal solar panels. Oh no!

Dear reader, do you think that BP, Shell, Chevron, and especially Saudi Aramco, are simply going to shake hands, give each other farewell hugs, and, with tears in their eyes, close up shop before retiring to exclusive golf clubs and super yachts around the planet? Well, no.

They need a marketing plan to drag us, those who send them mountains of cash each month, on the new change journey. When the leader of the free world - funny the word 'free' is in there when we all pay again and again for it. Would not leader of the fleeced world be more fitting on many occasions? Sorry, back to the point, when said leader states "Drill baby, drill!" You sense he is more on the side of Big Oil than EVs for the every-person. Yet you need more than three words from said leader, you need a marketing plan. Enter Saudi Armco and the FIA president.

Some genius noticed that we race fans love a good screaming V8, 10 or 12. Same genius then noticed the positive publicity around the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and how the "Motorhead" in each family tends to be asked for opinions on motoring purchases. In a light bulb moment, which probably still sees a fresh crate of champagne sent to their door each week, they connected the dots. Go back to ICE power units for F1. Use 'green' liquid fuels, thus retaining our golden goose, and get to kill EVs, all while convincing the paying public we did it for them! Genius!

Our continued addiction to liquid fuels ensures they can maintain their addiction to huge mountains of cash. But they are selling it as doing us, motoring fans and car owners, a huge favour! Someone crack another vintage Pol Roger please!

Why would the manufacturers who are so behind the hybrid engine rules right now, suddenly go "Gee, maybe a return to the 1980's is just what we need?" Because for the most part they build EVs that suck. Then governments - remember those folk addicted to fuel excise income - have been so slow to roll out charging infrastructure that driving an EV long distances is still a black art and a pain. So the manufacturers can stop all this exhausting "build a better EV" crap, and continue selling us the ICE powered crap they have pedalled for the last 100 years at ever increasing profit margins! All while looking like they are "...doing it for the fans". Win, win, win... if you're in Big Oil, liquid fuels distribution or a lazy ICE manufacturer who cannot build a quality EV to save your life.

So Elon. The great disrupter. He has so many fires to put out on so many fronts that it is truly ironic that at one point he wanted to sell flame throwers. Right now I bet he wishes he'd invested in AI-enabled foam flame suppressants. Without someone as crackers, disconnected from Big Oil and with hyper-deep pockets to fight the EV fight we, the paying public, are in trouble.

That unknown genius within Saudi Aramco has hit upon the perfect plan to sell us all into the fires of Hell, yet have us pleading for the bus to go faster! So do not be surprised to see a return to V8, 10 or 12 engines in an instant, because the money men of Big Oil have been shown a set of beautiful PowerPoint slides which show the golden path to new levels of profit. All dressed up as being "for the fans".

Oh, did I say that current estimates are a litre/gallon of synthetic fuel is currently projected to be between three and eleven times more expensive than our current Dinosaur juice? Governments and suppliers are crying at the profit up-lift that's going to generate. We the fans are really going to pay for this back to the future moment.

That's the problem with an addiction. It always costs you in the end. Just ask Jane (or Dave).

"@Natcheztoo - As the observation goes… “There’s no F1 racing on a dead planet.” It’s handy for all of us to keep the place clean and tidy. As many of my friends, and especially esteemed editor Balfe, are all F1 fans I can assure you I hate none of them. I respect them all, and I’m fortunate enough to know a few of them. The regular readers of PitPass hold particular respect from me, especially for reading some of my more eccentric articles! As an engineer I love progress. Hybrid engines are progress. Welcome to the future.

I cannot wait to see how next season plays out (or indeed how this one finishes!). Hopefully it is with excellent racing."

"America is crawling out from under the thumb of Euro-centric-greenism. Most of us no longer believe the careless claptrap bandied about condemning the use of oil.

In 2026 the F1 engines will be 50% electric with tiny, quiet engines. Thank G-d I got to witness the fire-breathing V10s that sounded like gored beasts before the madness took hold.

A lot of people on this side of the pond say that the liberal/socialists hate Trump more than they love America. From my viewpoint, Max Noble and his ilk hate the F1 fans more than they love the sport. Who, after all, pays for the whole F1 show? The fans. And I believe that most of them yearn for the day when F1 had fire-breathing engines that made the hair of the back of their necks stand up when the cars passed at full throttle.

I am sure the Mr. Noble, with his erudite wordiness, will completely destroy my plea for a return to the F1 that most fans seem to want."

"Even if some want neglect the effects of CO2, one cannot ignore the the effects of air pollution from ICE. Over 7 million premature deaths per year. So reducing ICE globally is a good thing. It doesn't need to removed from racing just a primary means of transport for people and goods."

"@Tyrbiter it would be great if CO2 really were a 'life-giving trace element'. Evidence suggests that it probably has other effects which can be seen in the fossil record going back for billions of years....

Personally I see no rational reason why F1, MotoGP, IndyCar etc should seek to switch from fossil fuels. I see no reason to 'ban' or cease Motor Sports on the basis of Climate change. The emissions of every vehicle which has taken part in Motor Sport for the last 100 years are inconsequential in terms of the causes of man-made climate change.
My beef is with the banal & hypocritical greenwashing surrounding switching to 'carbon neutral' fuels."

"@Tyrbiter - Humans are at plague proportions and something needs to give. Elon sending all the poor people to Mars would be a start…
@NS Biker - I think the problem is they are building excellent e-Motorbikes no one wants. We have a near neighbour who parks their cars outside so they can keep all their Harleys in the garage. They did not buy them, to save fuel, save the planet, or save the bottlenose dolphins. No. They purchased them for that “Horseman of the Apocalypse in coming!” Sound which only a Harley will provide. Don’t tell my wife but I love it when they fire up and those Harley engines let rip through utterly illegal after market exhausts… Heaven! … which is why no one is buying amazing e-Motorbikes which would leave a soft tail for dead… No sound = no soul.

"There is much ruminating on the future of F1, where should it go and how will it be fueled.
Of note was a recent comment by the head of the FIA, MBS, that "sustainable" fuel would be in region of $300 a liter. Call it Pounds, Euros, or whatever, that is definitely not a "sustainable" cost. Useable for racing and motivating positive public sentiment?, I think not.
The completely unmentioned sister to the F1 show, is Moto GP and the road relevant motorcycle industry.
No hybrid systems, no talk of alternative fuels and Moto GP is in the process of a new engine formula, with existing fuel sources.
My question is where is this going for the Motorcycle segment of the sporting world, on and or, off road.?
Nothing to see or hear, move along now.
As a teaser, I understand the E-Bike record at the IOM is in the range of 122 mph, set six years ago. Fantastic achievement, but it does not seem to be translating into useable road bikes. "

"The planet does not need saving, there is absolutely no, zero, zip, nada, reason for trying to reduce emissions of the life-giving trace atmospheric gas CO2. It won't make any difference to anything except to extract money from the powerless and the gullible. All of our energy comes from the sun, over its lifetime to date it has created the creatures that died and were compressed into carbon-rich, energy-dense fuels.

Anyone that thinks anything else is wrong and is going to hell in a handcart if they persist. What we need is a lot of eco-loons heads on spikes left to decompose in public for the education of those that cannot grasp the concepts that made our societies rich and modern."

"@All - some great observations in this discussion. @Esteemed Editor Balfe is quite right that in many areas the media has been paid off… or to be more to the point, purchased. Citizen Kane has never been more relevant… and as a result you’ll not see it mentioned often in the media these days. Sigh….

Personally I want my cake, and to eat it too… Let’s have amazing engines, great racing AND save the planet. I know my kids, and grand kids, are going to think better of me if I at least attempted to save the planet from turning into Mars for them…

"And no mention of LPG ...... shock horror i hear you say. Most of my cars in the last 25 years had LPG. The infrastructure in Italy is massive, certainly the best in europe, and there are millions of LPG users, even superluxury car owners...... loads of them. Its half the price and very green."

Re: In UK at least, our media faithfully publish it no matter how many times its debunked.

In the UK the entire media is bought and paid for, and not just in terms of this particular topic. The days of investigative journalism are long gone and sadly those that do try to tell the truth are shouted down or worse.

The media is complicit. "

"Great article, which hits various nails squarely on their heads. At one superficial level it could be classed as a bit of a 'conspiracy theory', but of course it's nothing of the sort.
What you've outlined is the SoP of modern mega-capitalism. No need for shady meetings in Bond villain eyries it's all a simple matter of self-interest, Shell, Aramco, Exon etc. compete at a micro level but at the macro, they ensure that they stay in business. As in Data Storage & AI the competition at the microlevel provides cover for the macro level manipulation.

The level of irrationality & misinformation being promoted by Big Oil about the EV transition is staggering & in UK at least, our media faithfully publish it no matter how many times its debunked.
Formula 1's proposed reversion to ICE power to the benefit of all the current competitors, Saudi Aramco\FIA et al is a classic ploy to suggest that you can have your hydrocarbon 'cake', eat it and yet remain carbon-neutral. Assuming it's possible to make genuinely carbon neutral synthetic fuel, what happens to the CO2 when you burn it in those sonorous V-motors at 20k RPM?"

"All that is needed is a new ICE only series not reliant on manufacturers but on some keners in that want produce high power, fuel efficient engines. You can have both with some compromises. Reliability may be one of the tradeoffs but a few engine detonations would add to spectacle. There will be plenty of old style tracks available soon as F1 transitions to street circuit only series.
