Mercedes leads the way on Day 3 of shakedown

NEWS STORY
28/01/2026

Kimi Antonelli and George Russell set the pace, as McLaren finally makes its debut and Audi struggles.

Russell set the fastest time of the morning session, but teammate Antonelli went even quicker when he took over the W17 after lunch.

Even more impressive than the pace of the car is its sheer reliability, the pair completing 183 laps in total.

Finally making its debut, McLaren's 2026 contender, the MCL40, had world champion Lando Norris at the wheel, the Briton completing 76 laps on his way to posting the third best time of the day.

Like Mercedes, Alpine had both of its drivers in action, the Enstone pair completing 125 laps in total on their way to posting the fourth and fifth best times.

Oliver Bearman suffered two issues over the course of the day, and while this morning's was soon rectified an unrelated issue in the afternoon limited his running to just 42 laps.

At Racing Bulls, Arvid Lindblad added another 120 laps to the Red Bull Powertrains unit tally, the Faenza-based outfit's sister team sitting out today's proceedings.

Also, sitting out today was Ferrari and Cadillac, while Audi's struggles continued, Nico Hulkenberg, the cause of one of today's three red flags, completing 68 laps.

While James Vowles was 'explaining' why Williams is not attending this week's shakedown, a few miles away a plane carrying the Aston Martin was touching down as the Silverstone outfit aims to take to the track tomorrow.

Alpine, Audi, Haas, Mercedes, Racing Bulls and Red Bull have each completed two days running, meaning they can only run again tomorrow or Friday, while Cadillac, Ferrari and McLaren, who have only run on one day, are free to un on both days.

As ever, and we cannot stress this enough, the times are unimportant - especially with no details on what compounds are being used, or fuel loads - what really, really matters is mileage, and Mercedes appears to be doing a repeat of 2014, though Red Bull appears ready to give the Silver Arrows a run for their money.
